When Charlie Swan, a British bird photographer who travels extensively, made the decision to sell fine art prints to collectors of his photography, we spent some time discussing the merits of different papers, and how each had their own advantages and disadvantages.
Ultimately, Charlie decided to offer archival pearl paper to his clients, a beautiful thick paper with a semi gloss shimmer that avoids reflections typically experienced with gloss papers. It was important that the paper was of archival quality. Clients who were purchasing prints needed to be confident that the photograph would last a significant period of time - and this paper will. This is only achievable when combining specific papers with specific inks (we only offer those combinations here at Greyscales, meaning they can be called Giclee prints, although galleries often term them 'archival pigment prints').
“Craig produces fantastic prints and is incredibly helpful on all the technical aspects.” Charlie Swan
Rather than print every photograph in one sitting, we firstly worked with Charlie to ensure colours and presentation of the final prints matched the expectations of his clients (confirmed with hard proof test prints). We were then able to print each photograph as it was sold. These prints were then hand checked, wrapped and despatched to the end client, along with a Certificate of Authenticity.
Working with Charlie has been, and continues to be a joy. The bird photography we get to work with means we can utilise the full capabilities of our printing equipment, whilst matching world class papers with our archival inks to produce some of the most magical prints we have seen in a while.
